GVMC organised an exhibition-cum-sale of bicycles on Wednesday at Swarnabharati Indoor Stadium which was inaugurated by the Commissioner of GVMC B. Ramanjaneyulu.
“The cycle club was inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on March 25. Vehicle free zones will be observed both in the morning and evening, and interested persons can become a member of the club, use the cycle daily and return it. There are 72 wards in the city and we are planning for 25 cycles in each ward. The club is formed to promote healthy living and to protect the environment from pollution,” he explained.
To protect against air and noise pollution thereby to promote healthy lifestyle, Greater Visakhapatnam Muncipal Corportation (GVMC) introduced cycle club and track for cyclists.
Around 500 bicycles were donated by the donors on the occasion to encourage cycling among all age groups. The donators are: GVMC Contractors Sangam 100, CMR 100, former GVMC council members 100, Visakhapatnam Builders' Association 50, Vaibhav Jewellers 25, Varun Motors 20, Vasavi Club 10, Seven Hills Hospital 10, Apollo Hospitals 15, Vizag Journalists' Forum 10 and others 60. The vehicle free zones or cycle tracks are introduced in two areas in the city. One zone is R.K. Beach Road and another from Y.S.R. Park to RTC complex - between 5 a.m. and 7.00 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Parking vehicles on the road pose a hindrance for free cycle movement. GVMC increased more parking lots for the public by clearing most of the shopping mall cellars.
This not only facilitates extra parking space but also paves free zone for non-motorable vehicles.
