July 09, 2014 12:40 am | Updated 12:40 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu on Tuesday said that the quarters at Salagrampuram would be given a facelift by spending Rs.3.5 crore.

He was speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of INTUC-affiliated National Port Trust Employees’ Union at Sitarama Kalyanamandapam.

Mr. Krishna Babu said Rs.1 crore had already been released for undertaking repair and reconstruction of the quarters, and promised to develop a beautifully-landscaped park.

Urging the unions and workers to help the port regain its past glory, he said the massive mechanisation work was a step in that direction.

He said there was an urgent need to protect public sector institutions, and urged the workers and officers to work sincerely for improving the productivity to compete with private ports.

INTUC national president G. Sanjeeva Reddy said all unions should set aside their differences and strive hard for the workers’ rights.

Former MP P.K. Samantaroy, senior union leaders — V.V. Rama Rao, D.K. Sarma, K. Bhavani Shankarudu — NPTEU president P.S. Naidu, and general secretary K. Pardesi Naidu were present.
