Red is the dominant colour of the port city and would continue to be so for the next few days with workers and leaders of the Left parties descending on the city to participate in the six-day 21{+s}{+t}Congress of the Communist Party of India Marxist starting Tuesday.
Red flags and red buntings with ‘hammer and sickle’ were put up all along the main roads of the city and the National Highway that passes through the city. The Port Sport complex – the venue of the meeting – was decked up.
Hundreds of party workers have been working round-the-clock for readying the venue and on Monday morning party general secretary Prakash Karat and Polit Bureau member B V Raghavulu were seen supervising the preparations. BV Raghavulu was helping the workers put up the hoardings. All the Polit Bureau and Central Committee members, party workers and members of affiliated organisations reached the city on Monday and have been put up in different colleges and guest houses.
“The Congress will see participation by 900 representatives, observers and invitees, among others,” Polit Bureau member Raghavulu said briefing the media on the arrangements. The venue has been named after senior party leaders Samar Mukherjee and Umanadh.
A village has been recreated at the venue under the supervision of cinema art director Ramana and Y Raju.
Leaders and representatives of other Left parties, including CPI, RSP, All India Forward Bloc, and CPI (ML) Liberation, would participate in the inaugural session.
