A resounding silence prevails at Doctors Colony, Seethammadhara, as the area is both traffic and pollution free. However, when it comes to hygiene and sanitation, the place lags behind.

Most people here crib about poor drainage system. Some of the lanes stink a lot as public urination menace robs the peace of mind of the colony residents. “Despite our repeated pleas, we are not able to put an end to this problem completely as the slum dwellers surrounding the locality continue to urinate in public. We feel bad that being in Doctors Colony, the place lags in hygiene,” says M. Gangadhara Rao, retired Superintendent of King George Hospital and one of the original residents.

Despite a private player and GVMC collectively taking care of the colony’s maintenance, a few of the streets appear to be a real eyesore. With inadequate dustbins installed all along the colony, most lanes are lined with heaps of litter. The situation is all the more pathetic when it rains.

Some of the colony women say that the area is poorly lit as most streetlights fail to work. “As a result, incidents of thefts are on the rise. In addition to this, irregular police patrolling is giving way to the increased cases of burglary too,” laments Sita Kumari, a resident and a social worker.

A few of the apartments also house clinics, making it convenient for the elderly patients of the colony. Just adjacent to the colony’s park, a small portion of site, earmarked for a community hall, has been lent out for commercial purpose. The prolonged delay in completing the proposed hall is disappointing the colony residents as they say that it would help them conduct several in-house functions and medical camps.
