Poor sanitation a bane

May 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

There are Burma Colonies in different parts of the State such as Elamanchili, Anakapalle, Srikakulam, Rajahmundry and Nellore, among others, and also in different parts of the city in areas like Kapparada, Sriharipuram, Pedagantyada, Siddharth Nagar and Burma Camp.

Formed in 1980, Burma Colony in Kapparada cries for attention in many aspects.

No toilets

None of the houses, except some newly constructed ones, have a toilet.

“Imagine the plight of adolescent girls and women who trek up the hills in the night to attend nature’s call,” says Ramanamma, a resident.

“Open defecation is one of the major problems faced by 90 per cent of the colony residents. Despite several representations made to the department officials, no effort has been made so far to construct toilets ever since the formation of the colony,” says D. Satyanarayana, a resident.

Most of the people here eke out a living by working as domestic help, electrician, plumber and labourer. Owing to poor economic condition, most children in the colony do not go to school.

“There is no government school or Aganwadi centre in the area. Although a few private schools are there, we are not able to send our children as we cannot afford the fee,” says Lakshmi, a mother of three children.
