The State Government is toying with the idea to convert Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) into a premier healthcare and research centre by converting it into a teaching hospital.

Asked to comment on whether they were considering granting autonomous status to VIMS, Health Minister Kaminent Srinivas, who visited King Goerge Hospital on Wednesday told The Hindu that they had a lot of ideas to develop VIMS. He indicated that the Cabinet would shortly finalise a scheme to develop VIMS on the lines of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences in Tirupati.

VIMS was developed in 110 acres at Health City abutting the National Highway here to serve the patients long ago.

It was thrown open to public last September after a lot of delay as the proposal to privatise it at one point of time had triggered widespread protests.

“Now we are getting 500 out-patients. Once the in-patient strength goes up we may consider appointing doctors on a permanent basis,” he said in reply to a specific query on the status of proposal pending before the government for recruiting own doctors by VIMS.

He said once VIMS was converted into teaching hospital for Dr. NTR Health University, it would get lot of funds to become a premier referral hospital. Mr. Srinivas said already they had launched advanced diagnostic facilities under public private partnership programme.

Stating that VIMS was a big boon for the people of North Andhra in mitigating their ailments, he said it was also set to become a world-class research centre. The hospital had excellent infrastructure and had the scope to become one of the top teaching hospitals in the country.

At present, VIMS has all the super-specialities except cardiac care and surgeries. King George Hospital has specialist care for cardiac care. Now plans are afoot to declare VIMS as a super-speciality by introducing cardiac treatment and surgeries.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu during his address at the TDP Mahanadu held here recently stated that they are considering giving autonomy to VIMS and they had already allotted ₹200 crore for development of the hospital.
