Early completion of air cargo complex sought

Pharma units in North Andhra have made a strong plea to the State and central governments to fulfil their commitment to set up National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Visakhapatnam.

Though the region has turned into a major pharma hub in AP and one of the major centres in the country, industries are suffering for want of high-end professionals. Twin demands of early completion of air cargo complex at the Visakhapatnam International Airport and establishment of NIPER have not materialised so far despite repeated representations.

With many not willing to migrate to Visakhapatnam, industries feel that locating NIPER in the region will be able to fulfil one of their long-awaited demands. “We were very happy when an announcement was made at the CII Partnership Summit in January, 2016. So far the land allotment is not completed,” pointed out CEO of a reputed pharma company.

There is also a talk that in view of opinions being sought for draft policy on pharma, the decision to set up new NIPERs may be put on hold. “As per indications, the government wants to concentrate more on strengthening existing NIPERs,” a State government official from the drug control administration told The Hindu.

An estimated 500 acres is required for developing the campus of NIPER. The Centre is also expected to fund to the tune of ₹600 crore to create infrastructure for the institute, considered on par with premier institute like IIT. Major pharma units like Hospira, Mylan, Aurobindo, Eisai, Reddy’s, Divi’s Lab and Hetero have their units in the region. Many more are also in the pipeline. Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC), developed by Ramky at Parawada, is abuzz with activity with most of the 100 units starting their operation.

Second pharma city

Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas during one of his visits to the city had also indicated setting up of second pharma city. AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation is in the process of acquiring land in Nakkapalli and Atchutapuram areas. The pharma industry from the region has an estimated turnover of ₹20,000 crore.

“In view of bright future ahead for pharma sector, the authorities should expedite the process to set up NIPER in Visakhapatnam,” Vizag Development Forum vice-president O. Naresh Kumar said.
