Lowest number from Srikakulam and Vizianagaram
A record number of 10,123 applications were received for fresh passports during the nine-day special drive conducted by the Passport Office, netting in a revenue of Rs.1,51,84,500 to the Government.
The drive commenced on November 7 when fresh applicants from all the districts under the jurisdiction of the Regional Passport Office – East, West Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts – thronged the office to submit their applications as they were not getting online slots.
The special drive proved to be a boon to applicants, who were not getting online slots for months on end. Brokers and agents, however, cursed their fate as they lost their ‘income’ as thousands of prospective applicants who would have approached them for slots would no longer do so.
A total of 1,876 applications were received on the first day. As the crowds became unmanageable on the first day, the applicants were called district-wise from the next day. A total 1,557 applications were received from Visakhapatnam city and district on November 19 and 1,467 applications were received from the same place on November 20, which was the highest from any district at the special camp. This was followed by West Godavari with 1425 applications on November 8 and 450 on the next day. As many as 1,413 applications were received from East Godavari district on November 12 and 820 (November 14).
The lowest number of applications was received from Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts with 748 applications on November 15 and 367 on the next day. “Already 1,400 applications have been uploaded into the system and we hope to complete uploading of the remaining ones in the next three weeks. The passports would be issued in 60 days subject to receipt of police verification reports,” Passport Officer A.T. Murthy said on Wednesday.
He said that about one per cent of the applications were kept pending as the applicants had not submitted documents like Date of Birth Certificate and promised to submit them later. Such applicants have to submit the same before the uploading of data was completed or else face the prospect of rejection of application.
