Options on funding the Yeleru pipeline project will be explored to improve water supply to the city, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development and Special Officer of GVMC B. Sam Bob has said.

Speaking to reporters after a review with officials, his first as Special Officer, he said borrowing funds from agencies like Hudco would be explored. Alternately, the project can be taken up in JNNURM Plus.

The 156-km pipeline is proposed to prevent wastage, evaporation and pilferage because of which only about 50 per cent of the water released at the canal was realised.

Scotching the talk doing the rounds that water supply would be privatised, Mr. Sam Bob said since 40 per cent of water supplied was not accounted for, a pilot project was mooted in one area of Hyderabad. And even on that no final decision was taken, he stated.

Asserting that slums should not be relocated because livelihood issues were involved Mr. Sam Bob said sanitation had to be improved to keep them clean and ensure health.

On comprehensive solid waste management, he said the proposal to hand it over to a private firm was pending with the government. Some clarifications have been sought from the GVMC.

GVMC was doing well in taking up projects under JNNURM and raising resources for them. There were some inter departmental issues to be sorted out and all efforts would be made to complete the projects, including the Asilmetta flyover, by March next.

Housing

On housing, he said while 12,000 of the 15,000 houses proposed were completed and 7,000 occupied, social infrastructure had to be created. “For the time being schools will be started in some of the housing units and the Engineering Department will be asked to ready designs for schools,” he said.

The proposal for merger of Anakapalle and Bhimili with GVMC was pending with the government, he said. The merger, however, would bring in mission funds.

Encroachments

Mr. Sam Bob said of late there had been a spate of encroachments in the city. On the direction of the High Court, the probe agencies had submitted their reports which were being processed by the government and some were yet to be submitted.

On the revised CDP, he said after the draft was ready it would be open for two months to elicit views from various sections.

District Collector V. Seshadri, Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana and VUDA Vice-Chairman Kona Sasidhar were present.
