The Opposition parties on Tuesday organised a day's fast at the GVMC in protest against the undemocratic manner in which the Mayor had abruptly adjourned the general body meeting on Monday.

MLC from North Andhra Graduates' Constituency M.V.S. Sarma, TDP MLA V.Ramakrishnababu, 27 TDP corporators, two from CPI(M), three from YSR Congress and one from CPI participated. TDP district president Ch.Ayyanna Patrudu expressed the party's solidarity and MLC K. Nageshwar spoke in support of the agitation. TDP floor leader P. Mutyala Naidu, his deputy G. Amarnath, CPI(M) floor leader Botta Eswaramma, CPI's A.J. Stalin, YSR Congress' G.V. Ravi Raju were among those present.

Mr. Sarma said majority of corporators gave letters to the Mayor demanding that the property tax issue be included in the agenda on Monday.

The issue was taken up in ‘zero hour.'

While earlier discussions had ended without any significant outcome, a discussion in view of the ramifications of the High Court's judgment was necessary.

Resolution

The 1990 rules barring increase beyond 75 per cent were in force till March 31, 2011.

The revision on the basis of rental values was done in 2007 and hence it should be below 50 per cent.

The council resolution in 2010 was also made in conformity with the 1990 rules while the Commissioner was following the State Government's instructions.

Mr. Sarma said the Mayor was not willing to send another resolution in the light of the High Court judgment but was only allowing a detailed explanation by the Commissioner.

The MLC said the Mayor adjourned the general body meeting abruptly as he lost the confidence of majority of members.
