An outing to the city’s famous Ramakrishna Beach turned out to be tragic for a family, when one of its members died on the spot and three others from the same family sustained injuries in a freak accident on Sunday.

The incident occurred when the driver of a school bus that was coming down the Taj Gateway Hotel road towards RK Beach, lost control and rammed the opposite footpath and the beach parapet wall at Novotel junction, where the family members and several others were enjoying the cool breeze sitting on the parapet wall.

The accident occurred around 8 p.m. when the schoolchildren came for an award function and were about to return home. Luckily, the children were yet to board the bus, said ADCP (traffic) K. Mahendra Patrudu.

As per the initial reports from the police, the deceased was identified as Dharma Rao who is said to the father of Additional SP of AP SIB (State intelligence bureau) D.N. Kishore.

It was also reported that Mr. Kishore and his son and daughter were also injured in the accident. This apart, a 10-year-old boy, Srikar, and the driver of the bus, Krishna, were also injured.

Commissioner of Police T. Yoganand, who visited the spot, said that a team would be constituted in association with the RTA to investigate the case. “We will also check if the driver was drunk or the brakes had failed and also ascertain the condition of the vehicle,” he said. “This is the third similar type of accident at the same spot in the recent times and we need to have a re-look on the road engineering,” Mr. Yoganand added.
