The Indian Youth Congress is out on an arduous journey to revamp its image and build a disciplined party cadre that abides by the law and is dedicated to serve the people.

The challenge lies in not only getting the cadre to fall in line but also getting the senior Congress Party leaders to understand and accept the new regime and regimen, State Youth Congress general secretary Marri Pururava Reddy explained. He is in charge for five parliamentary constituencies Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Araku and Anakapalle.

The YC leaders are now expected to organise public service events, at least two every month, in their areas under the YC banner and document and file reports on them to the State office. The performance is reviewed and is entered into the national database which is monitored at New Delhi. The best performers get appreciation letters signed by Rahul Gandhi and have an opportunity to be noticed by the high command. On the other hand the poor performance too gets noticed and disciplinary action initiated against the activists. Punishment of the YC members would reflect poorly on the senior leaders from the area who would have to cut a sorry figure with the High Command, he said.

The system is thorough and does away with any form of favouritism or nepotism. The YC leaders cannot get away with the influence of senior Congress party leaders, in fact the son of Union Minister Balaram Naik and son of Basavaraju Saraiah were suspended for not working, Mr. Reddy said.

The Youth Congress leaders in the North Coastal Andhra are by and large following the new system, however, there are minor issues. The biggest challenge is to get the other senior party leaders to understand the role and responsibility of the activists.
