Officials heave a sigh of relief

November 08, 2010 04:17 pm | Updated 04:17 pm IST - SRIKAKULAM:

The district administration has heaved a sigh of relief with the ‘Jal' cyclone having little impact on the district.

District Collector N. Srikanth told The Hindu that there was no danger to the district, as the impact was mostly felt in Nellore and Krishna districts.

However, he directed the officials to monitor the situation in 104 villages in 11 coastal mandals till the cyclone warning was withdrawn.

Control rooms would continue to function till Monday. The district administration cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

However, many fishermen ventured into the sea on Sunday despite warnings from the district administration.

“The government always issues warnings, but it is least bothered to provide livelihood to poor fishermen. That is why it is very difficult for us to stop them from venturing into the sea,” K. Ramulu, a representative of Teera Pranta Matsyakara Ikya Vedika, said.
