NPCIL yet to apply for nod to set up Kovvada plant: CPI(M)

June 21, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:12 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

It is once again confirmed that the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has not applied till now for setting up nuclear power project at Kovvada in Srikakulam district, though the Government has issued a notice to take up the social impact assessment (SIA) in the area where the plant has been proposed.

This was stated by CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Narasinga Rao at a press conference here on Monday.

That the NPCIL has not applied to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in the past for setting up a nuclear power plant at Kovvada has been confirmed through a RTI Act petition, and again Mr. Narasinga Rao has filed a petition under the RTI Act with the AERB and the reply stated that the NPCIL has still to seek an approval for the plant at Kovvada.

People of the region are agitating against the proposal of setting up a nuclear plant in their area and are supported by the Opposition parties and environment activists, since the plant is being shifted from Gujarat to Kovvada and the untested Andhra Pradesh 1000 type reactors to be set up there are a great threat to the life in a radius of 170 km, from Kakinada to Chatrapur in Odisha in case of an accident.
