Now, open defecation invites fine

Following declaration of the city as open-defecation free and its publication in the district gazette, fine will be imposed for violation, according to Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan.

For the first time a fine of ₹100 will be imposed, ₹200 for second time and ₹300 for the third violation and the penal provision comes into effect immediately.

By another gazette notification, GVMC also brought into implementation Solid Waste Management Rules- 2016. Segregation of dry and wet waste for bulk waste generators, including apartment complexes, hotels, kalyanamantapams, RWAs and hostels, and compost-making is compulsory. For those violating, fine will be imposed.

Mr. Hari Narayanan said by provision of toilets by under construction companies was mandatory as stray incidents of open defecation by construction workers were noticed.

Building plan approval will be given only after provision of temporary toilets.
