To support and keep ‘avadhanam’, a literary feat unique to Telugu, live and strong, Andhra University will introduce a course in ‘avadhanam’, Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju announced here on Tuesday.
The university has been encouraging ‘avadhanam’ for a long time and would take up more programmes in this direction, Prof. Raju said while inaugurating a three-day Yugala Mahila Jaatiya Satavadhanam by Bulusu Aparna and Pullabhotla Naga Shanti Swarupa at Dr. Y.V.S. Murthi auditorium of AU College of Engineering. The programmes is being jointly organised by the AU Department of Music and Dance and Visakha Sahiti.
President of Visakha Sahiti Kolavennu Malayavasini presided. She explained Satavadhanam. Sanskrit and Telugu scholar Vedula Subrahmanya Sastry said concentration of mind was ‘avadhanam’ and it earned a mention in the Vedas also. It would help poetry to thrive, Prof. Sastry said.
Scholar Dhulipala Mahadeva Mani, who trained Aparna and Swarupa, thanked Prof. Raju for accepting his suggestion to introduce a course in Avadhanam, a first by any university. He was happy to see his disciples perform the difficult literary feat.
HoD of AU Department of Music and Dance Anuradha, S. Vijaya Kumar of Vijay Nirman and Kandala Kanakamahalakshmi of Visakha Sahiti spoke.
Former Vice-Chancellor K.V. Ramana, C.S. Rao of Praja Spandana and others were present.
The Satavadhanam commenced with Dattapadi part in which the duo answered questions from 25 Pruchakas.
Earlier, Aparna and Swarupa performed Ghantavadhanam to let audience understand what this literary feat was.
