The Centre on Thursday approved the installation of mechanised fertilizer handling facility at the Visakhapatnam Port (VPT) at an estimated cost of Rs. 217.58 crores.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure gave its nod to the mechanisation of the berth with additional bagging and dispatch facility, which would enable the port to handle 5.2 million tonnes of fertilizer per annum.

To be implemented within two years under Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis, the project is expected to enhance operational efficiency and reduce cost of handling and avoid demurrages to ships, besides minimising the pollution and environmental problems.
