No plastic bags in Elamanchili from today

December 31, 2014 11:36 pm | Updated 11:36 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Plastic bags will be banned in the area under Elamanchili Municipality from Thursday.

A decision to this effect, taken earlier, is being implemented from the New Year, chairperson Pilla Rama Kumari and Municipal Commissioner Sattaru Srinivasa Rao said.

Extensive campaign was conducted in the municipal area telling proprietors of hotels, provision stores and vegetable and fish sellers not to hand over purchased items in plastic bags to their customers. Violation of the rule would attract a fine of Rs. 500 on the customer and Rs. 1,000 on the seller. If the violation continued case would be booked against the violators and they would be handed over to the court.

Ms. Rama Kumari and Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to people to support the ban on plastic bags and help in protecting environment.
