No need for panic, says collector

September 23, 2009 03:23 pm | Updated 03:23 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

With swine flu spreading and more cases being reported, an awareness programme for people’s representatives was organised by the DMHO’s office here on Tuesday. Held at the direction of Collector J. Syamala Rao, it was aimed at spreading details of symptoms, precautions and treatment more among the people.

Mr. Syamala Rao, who presided, said there was no need to get panicky if there was proper awareness about swine flu. If one was having symptoms of swine flu, he or she must immediately get treated by a doctor.

There was sufficient stock of medicines and 10 screening centres had been established. Later, following a suggestion from a people’s representative from Narsipatnam area, it was announced during the meeting that another screening centre would be established immediately in Narsipatnam.

Pamphlet released

Mayor P. Janardhana Rao released a pamphlet on swine flu and said since it was a contagious disease, every one in the district must be aware of it.

Anakapalle MP Sabbam Hari suggested repeated announcements at railway stations and bus stations on swine flu preventive measures and also asking people with swine flu symptoms to immediately get treated. This should be done since screening of all passengers at the railway and bus stations was not possible.

Awareness programme must be done on a war-footing and every head of government departments who attended the meeting must create awareness among employees of their respective departments.

The employees could also spread the message among their neighbours, friends and others. Mr. Hari said everyone must feel it their responsibility to advise people affected to get tested at a screening centre.

Earlier, DMHO J. Sarojini gave a power-point presentation on swine flu, including its origin, symptoms and treatment. She said that screening centres would be established in other hospitals if needed.

Councillors from Anakapalle V. Raja Satish and Takasi Venkateswara Rao and others made some suggestions. None of the MLAs attended.
