The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, has allotted 60 seats spread over eight branches of engineering for students from Andhra Pradesh for this academic year.
The seats have been allotted under a segment called ‘AP Quota Super Numeric’.
This was informed by HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao in Visakhapatnam on Friday.
In all, there are 740 seats in the college. As per the norms, 50 per cent of the seats are meant for the home State.
Prior to bifurcation of the State, 200 students from the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh would have got seats in the premier engineering college under the home State quota.
“Now, students from Andhra Pradesh are eligible only for the other 50 per cent of the seats meant for other than home State. To have a level-playing field, NIT –Warangal has allotted 60 seats for students from A.P. under the quota,” the Minister told The Hindu .
According to Prof. T. Srinivasa Rao, Director of NIT, Warangal, students from A.P. can apply both for the ‘AP Quota SN’ and for the 50 per cent quota under non-home State.
“If they apply for one, they will be considered only for that quota,” he said.
NIT-Warangal is the mentor for the NIT that is coming up at Tadepalligudem in West Godavari. Land is yet to be identified and allotted to it. The institute will have 480 seats and of which 240 will be for students for A.P. under the home State quota.
Tribal University
The proposed Tribal University is all set to come up at Relli village of Kothavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram district from the next academic year.
“The government has earmarked 526 acres of government land and is awaiting approval from the Central Government,” said Sumita Dawra, Principal Secretary, Higher Education.
She told The Hindu that the university would be the second of its kind in the country and was being set up on the lines of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh.
“We have asked the Centre to nominate IGNTU or AU as mentor institute,” she said.
