Superintendent of Police (Government Railway Police), Vijayawada, Syam Prasad Rao reviewed the functioning of the night beat system and the sub-controls set up at Visakhapatnam Railway Station, introduced about a month ago, on Thursday. One Head Constable and four Constables are travelling in night trains to keep a watch on the movement of anti-social elements and to prevent crimes.
A total of 19 police beats were formed to take care of the 45 trains passing through GRP Vijayawada district, which extends from Guntur to Itchapuram during nights. Mr. Prasad Rao said that the posting of night beat police had brought down the incidence of deaths by falling from moving trains by 50 per cent and chain snatching and property offences on trains had drastically come down. On the contrary thefts in special trains and weekly trains, in which night beats were not introduced, were being committed during nights.
He said that two sub-controls were set up at Visakhapatnam railway station. As part of the efforts to control the growing chain pulling thefts in Vijayawada and Guntur areas firing orders were given to the policemen.
