Detention of incoming trains on the outskirts of the city may soon be a thing of the past once the two new platforms under construction are commissioned. Work on construction of platform no. 7 and 8, that has been going on at a snail's pace for the last three years, is nearing completion.
The platforms have been constructed long ago and the electrification work was also completed. Finishing works like flooring and laying of tiles have taken quite a long time. Officials attribute the delays to handling of the work by more than one agency under the purview of the Survey and Construction Organisation.
It's learnt that the authorities have adopted a ‘piece-meal' approach for the completion of the project as works involving expenditure of Rs.2.5 crore and above have to be sanctioned by the Ministry. Works with expenditure of less than Rs.2.5 crores can, however, be sanctioned at the Zonal-level.
“We wanted all facilities in place before the commissioning. This is because passengers would tend to compare the new platforms with platform no. 1 and they would be upset if the facilities do not meet their expectations. The new platforms will be commissioned next month,” Additional Divisional Railway Manager C.S. Jeengar told The Hindu.
The platform height at Duvvada Railway Station will be increased for the convenience of passengers. A second entry would also be provided soon and the facilities would be augmented at Duvvada soon, he said.
