An island which emerged near the RK Beach due to effective dredging by Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) was thronged by a large number of holiday revellers on Ugadi, the Telugu New Year.
Visakhapatnam Port Trust, as part of its annual beach nourishment project, had engaged Dredge XXI, the vessel acquired by Visakhapatnam-headquartered DCI to dredge in the ‘sand trap’ developed near Dolphin’s Nose between the breakwater area and the sunken ship, pumped out the deposits for nourishment towards RK Beach side.
By installing a floating pipe and adopting rainbow technology, the deposits were used in filling the eroding areas. The emergence of island has been attracting people from various areas.
DCI Chairman and Managing Director Capt. D.K. Mohanty said the island was a pointer to the fact that they had the expertise to ‘recreate’ and nourish beaches.
At the DCI Foundation Day celebrations held on Saturday, he congratulated the master, chief engineer and crew members of Dredge XXI for successfully completing the beach nourishment project within a record time and creating an island in front of Varun Beach.
