Over 350 to be dug in next 10 days

To tide over the water crisis being experienced in the city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has decided to expedite sinking of new borewells as part of its Summer Action Plan.

Mayor P. Janardhana Rao told reporters here on Friday that in the next 10 days some 350 to 400 borewells would be sunk. He had held a meeting with rig owners on Friday and asked them to take up digging of private wells only after completing the corporation work. They were assured that the required pipes and casing would be provided to them.

On its part, the GVMC would clear their bills in 10 to 15 days. Each ward would get three to six new borewells.

The Mayor said presently water was being pumped at the Godavari Lift Irrigation Scheme at Kateru using three pumps.

The corporation is contemplating using another pump too. Of the 14 mgd being pumped, 7 mgd is being given to industries. Some percentage of water to industries has been reduced giving priority to drinking water.

Answering a question on whether the new borewells at more depth would deprive old wells in the vicinity of yield, he said the geologists' view was obtained.

In charge Municipal Commissioner S. Krishna Murthy, floor leaders Behera Bhaskara Rao and Ch.V. Pattabhi were present.
