The Kancharapalem police arrested a housewife dwelling in an apartment complex on the charge of breaking into her neighbours flat and stealing 92 grams of gold ornaments and 50 tolas of silver articles. The accused has been identified as Visanagiri Kalpana (32), wife of V. Appa Rao.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Varada Raju, Kalpana, a resident of Devi Towers, Marripalem Vuda Layout, befriended Bobbili Radha, a software engineer, who was recently married and living with her physically handicapped mother in the opposite flat. They became very close as Kalpana at times would take care of her sick mother.

On August 21, Radha and her mother left for Hyderabad on some work and as usual she handed over the keys of the apartment and the almirah to Kalpana. “In fact the accused also helped Radha in packing her suitcase. At that time she noticed that Radha had taken some jewellery in the suitcase and the rest was kept in the almirah,” said Mr. Varada Raju.

Breaching the trust, the accused entered the apartment on August 25 and made good with the gold from the almirah. To prove her innocence she also called up Radha the same night and informed her about the ‘house-breaking.’

Later, when the heat built up due to the police investigation, Kalpana packed some of the stolen items in a newspaper sheet and stuffed it into the motorcycle bag of another neighbour Utpal Kumar. On recovery of the items, Mr. Utpal promptly informed the police. Taking a lead from the torn newspaper sheet, the police zeroed in on Kalpana, as the remaining part of the sheet was found in her house. In the meantime, she dumped the remaining part of the stolen items in a flush tank.

Confesses to crime

“Having been cornered, she confessed to the crime. All the stolen items were recovered and she was booked under IPC Section 457, and also given bail,” said Inspector B. Mohan Rao.
