Seven non-communicable diseases’ clinics in the district are extending counselling and treatment to tobacco addicts, District Medical and Health Officer J. Sarojini has said.
In each of the clinics, a medical officer and an occupational therapist will deal with problems like blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases and cancer and as a part of it provide counselling and treatment to tobacco addicts, she said after flagging off a rally to mark “World No Tobacco Day.”
She cautioned against the dangers of smoking saying tobacco was the second largest killer in the country with 10 lakh deaths owing to use of tobacco.
WHO favoured ordinary packing without any display, she added.
CEO T. Chandramouliswara Rao inaugurated an anti-tobacco programme organised by Queen’s NRI Hospital on the Beach Road.
Dr. B. Ravisankar expressed concern over the proportional growth of smokers and tobacco-related deaths. Surgical oncologist Ramesh and radiation oncologist Sumandas advised changes in lifestyle to prevent incidence of cancer.
