Responding to an appeal from the Orissa Government on Saturday, the Indian Navy evacuated personnel stranded mid-river from Malkangiri district, over 110 km. north-west of Visakhapatnam.
Following a request from the District Collector of Malkangiri, a Seaking helicopter of the Eastern Naval Command, braving adverse weather conditions, airlifted early in the morning, four persons from a small island in the middle of river Kolab at Udaygiri village of Kartanapalli Gram Panchayat of the district.
The quartet was stranded for over three days on a small rock of and rescue by boat could not be effected by the State authorities as the river was in spate. All the four personnel were winched up by a rescue team from 100 feet above ground as there was no place to land. They were given food and first aid and later dropped at the CISF helipad in Malkangiri.
