A Naval team comprising 40 trainee officers and men of INS Satavahana returned from a cycling expedition to East Godavari district on Friday.
The expedition, organised by the Submarine Training School, aimed at inculcating a spirit of adventure among young officers and sailors to educate them on various issues pertaining to environmental and ecological conservation.
The expedition, flagged off by Commanding Officer, INS Satavahana, Commodore A. Srinivas on Thursday, had covered a total distance of 260 km from Visakhapatnam to Maredumilli village in East Godavari district.
The group that had a medical team conducted a medical camp at the Integrated Tribal Development Area (ITDA) Residential School and distributed medicines free of cost to villagers of Maredumilli. More than 600 villagers benefited from the camp. The sarpanch, ZPTC and the principal of the school participated.
A clean-up drive in the village was also undertaken by the team as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative.
Addressing the personnel on the occasion Cmde. Srinivas said that apart from promoting cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly means of transportation, the expedition endeavoured to bring about awareness on environmental issues such as depleting fossil fuels and global warming.
A clean-up drive in Maredumilli village is also undertaken by the team as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative.
