Women’s contribution to mainstream of organisational development is bleak. Over a period of time, their personal preferences take over their professional demands dissuading them from climbing up the ladder, Director of Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh Centre for Women’s Studies (DDDCWS) B. Ratna Kumari said.
Addressing the gathering at a two-day workshop on ‘Women empowerment for organisational excellence’ organised by DDDCWS for the women employees of Naval Dockyard that began here on Tuesday, she spoke on gender sensitisation at length and said: “Unless women consider their career seriously and focus on upgrading themselves to meet the challenges, their potential continues to remain unrecognised.”
Additional General Manager of HRD at Naval Dockyard Commodore Vijay Bambal said: “This is the first of its kind workshop we are organising by tying up with Andhra University. Men and women are equal partners where development is concerned. It is our endeavour to create equal opportunities for women to grow in the organisation.”
Given an opportunity, women can excel in any domain they step into, Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University G.S.N. Raju said. “Women bear almost every responsibility of the family. Yet, it is unfortunate that most of them are deprived of education and better standard of living. The fact that we are protected by goddesses rather than the gods speaks about women empowerment. However, in this male-dominated society, women need to grab opportunities to prove their credentials.”
More than 35 women employees of Naval Dockyard were given tips by trainer Uday Kumar on personality development. According to him, understanding the organisational needs and upgrading oneself with the skill set will go a long way in achieving success. “We will be able to perform better in any company only when we feel responsible towards our job. Our success depends on how we utilise the given opportunity and build competencies,” he said.
Principal of AU College of Arts and Commerce D. Prabhakara Rao along with other invitees participated in the book release on Property Rights of Dalit Women: A Critical Analysis, written by Prof. Ratna Kumari and assistant professor in DDDCWS K. Mary Sujatha.
