Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is finding it difficult to mobilise resources for the Telugu Desam Party poll promise of farm loan waiver. He is trying to divert people’s attention by raking up trivial issues concerning Telangana. Many ticklish issues are sure to crop up post bifurcation and they need to be addressed and the onus is on TDP to bridge the gap between the states.

Ill-conceived idea
The proposal of the GVMC to install fibre-glass animals on traffic islands to beautify the city is an ill-conceived idea. Given the financial status of the GVMC, Rs. 21 lakh, the estimated cost for the exercise, could have been spent on other essential projects like repairing roads, making pavements usable by pedestrians, saving endangered trees by relocating them and improving sanitation services. Further, there is a need to allocate funds for protection and renovation of heritage buildings.

Time to act
The GVMC has not taken up concrete lining of the natural drain at Pithapuram Colony leading to contamination of groundwater since a decade. The drain has become a garbage dump and breeding ground for mosquitoes. On the other hand they talk of 100-day action plan to control mosquitoes and water-borne diseases. The officials should focus on action.

Telangana claims
Power-starved Telangana is trying to usurp the power generated by Upper and Lower Sileru projects. The Sileru, a minor tributary of the Godavari, originates in Anantagiri Hills. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha built Machkund and Balimela projects during 1950-1960. Below Balimela Dam 3300 cusecs of water is released to AP and the state built Upper Sileru and Lower Sileru projects to generate power. Telangana staking claim to the power from these projects would create a shortfall for the State and is unwarranted.
