Post-bifurcation, Visakahapatnam is emerging as a prominent medical hub in the State, MP Kambhampati Haribabu has said.

Participating as chief guest at the inauguration of a portable ventilator at the Government ENT Hospital here on Thursday, Mr. Haribabu said Visakhapatnam had been meeting the medical needs of patients not only from the city and district but also from North Andhra districts apart from Odisha and Chattisgarh.

King George Hospital (KGH), which was over a century old, had been rendering yeomen service to the poor.

The number of outpatients at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) has also been registering a steady increase.

He said the Centre was implementing several schemes to provide medical services to the people and cochlear implantation was one such programme.

He said the Government ENT Hospital has already performed 13 cochlear implantation surgeries under the scheme.

The Superintendent had brought to his notice on an unfortunate incident in the hospital in the past due to the lack of a ventilator.

Mr. Haribabu said he had sanctioned ₹5.5 lakh from his MPLADS funds for purchase of the portable ventilator.

Collector Pravin Kumar said in the past patients used to be referred to Hyderabad for various treatments in the past but now more and more cases were being referred to Visakhapatnam.
