Union Minister of state for Agriculture Tariq Anwar has promised to use his good offices for redressing the grievances of fishermen including their demand for categorising fishermen as Scheduled Tribes as in vogue in Karnataka and other States.

Launching the TSR Fishermen Welfare Forum organised by Rajya Sabha member T. Subbarami Reddy at Chepaluppada village near here on Saturday, he assured to consider their genuine demands like increasing the compensation to those who die while fishing in high seas from Rs.1 lakh to Rs.5 lakh and payment of diesel subsidy to all boat owners without fixing any cut off date of registration. AICC secretary K.B. Krishna Murthy said that he would see that measures the Karnataka State has implemented are taken by the Centre for treating the fishermen as Scheduled Tribes.

Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Rajya Sabha member T. Subbarami Reddy, Bheemunipatnam MLA M. Srinivasa Rao, AICC secretary Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy and others were present.
