Social activist Medha Patkar on Wednesday strongly opposed land acquisition in Kovvada of Ranasthalam mandal in Srikakulam district saying that the nuclear plant would be a disaster for ecology as well as people of North Andhra region.
She demanded that the land acquisition process should be stopped completely as nuclear was no more an option for electricity generation in the world.
Ms. Medha Patkar said many developed countries such as Germany had decided to stop operation of nuclear plants by 2020. She interacted with the local people of Kovvada along with CPI(M) senior leaders such as Ch. Narasinga Rao, Bhaviri Krishnamurthy, Panchadi Paparao, CITU general secretary of Srikakulam unit D. Govindarao.
Appeal to people
They extended their support to the local people while asking them to strongly oppose the project. They also objected establishment of 10,000 megawatts project on a single location though the entire installed capacity of nuclear plants was around 4,000 mega watts. Mr. Govinda Rao said workers of various industries and other people would be affected by the nuclear wastage.
Meanwhile, the government postponed direct interaction between officials and local people fearing that it would lead to tension with the proposed agitation. The officials of land acquisition unit were supposed to invite objections from the villagers from November 27 to 29. Now, the officials said the villagers could come to Tehsildar office of Ranasthalam to submit their objections.
