: Rallies and meetings with focus on maintaining unity to fight for the rights of the working class marked the May Day celebrations in the city on Sunday.

Carrying flags and placards underlining the importance of labour unity, the workers both representing organised and unorganised sectors called for more social security measures.

A huge rally was taken out by CITU on beach road comprising a large number of women. To the accompaniment of Dappu and other musical instruments Kolatam troupe (folk dancers) entertained the passersby.

At a rally organised in the morning, they showcased caricatures showing Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hanging workers.

“Govt. favouring MNCs”

AITUC national vice-president D. Adinarayana took part in a series of programmes at Ukkunagaram and other places. In his speech, he called for united struggle to safeguard the interest of the workers. He also criticised the government for not giving the working class their due.

Unfurling party flag at district office of CPI, party State assistant secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy said his party would be in forefront in protecting the interest of unorganised workers. While doling out sops to multinationals, the government was ignoring the interest of workers by denying them basic amenities and wages.

The Left parties as well as the INTUC came down heavily on the BJP-led NDA Government for trying to muzzle the voice of trade unions, prohibiting strikes and acting as agents of corporate managements to withdraw benefits to the workers. At a meeting organised by Steel INTUC at Ukkunagaram, PCC vice-president G. Sailajanath, RINL Director (Personnel) G.B.S. Prasad, Visakha Steel Employees’ Congress general secretary Mantri Rajasekhar, president G. Venkat Rao, law professor Y. Satyanarayana, INTUC State vice-president Neerukonda Ramachandra Rao and others spoke.
