Maoist leader, two militia members surrender

A CPI (Maoist) area committee member and two members of the militia surrendered before Superintendent of Police Koya Praveeen.

Maoist area committee member Korra Gasi (27) alias Jhansi of Koyyuru area in Visakhapatnam agency, and Maoist militia members Buturi Appa Rao (45) and Velusuri Lakshmaiah (30) were presented before the media by the official here on Thursday.

Ill-health has been cited as the reason for their surrender. Talking to the media, Jhansi said that she has been suffering from various ailments from quite some time and the Maoist leadership was not allowing her to go to the city areas for treatment. “Vexed with the unyielding nature of the leaders, I decided to surrender,” she said.

The SP said Jhansi has been associated with the CPI (Maoists) since 2007, and was involved in 24 offences in Visakhapatnam district, including a number of encounters with the police. She was also involved in the abduction of then Malkangiri district Collector Vineel Krishna, and a few other offences.

Jhansi was the area committee member of East Visakha Joint Division, and primarily worked in Andhra Odisha Border areas.

Having knowledge of nursing, she also served as part-time medic in the outfit.

According to Jhansi, many other cadre members were suffering from ill-health and are being denied proper medical attention by the Maoists leadership. “A few more are likely to surrender in the coming days,” she said.

The SP said that Appa Rao and Lakshmaiah were natives of GK Veedhi area. Dr. Koya Praveen also said that the reward money and other benefits such as a piece of land will be soon given to Jhansi.
