‘Make Vizag main venue of National Games’

July 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The State government which is keen to host the National Games in 2018 can make Visakhapatnam the main venue of the Games since the city has all infrastructure, sports organisations said here on Friday.

Before that the State government must recognise the AP Olympic Association, headed by MP Jayadev Galla since the High Court decided that this is the recognised association and also the Indian Olympic Association has granted its recognition to it, and facilitate APOA to make a bid to host the National Games, chairman of Visakhapatnam District Volleyball Association S. Kodandaramiah said here on Friday. Former Olympian weightlifter M.V. Manikyalu and secretary of District Basketball Association B. Ramayya were present.

The State government has deposited Rs. 50 lakh with IOA to make a bid to host the Games but since the bid did not go from the State’s Olympic Association as per the rule, the bid is not being considered by IOA which has already written twice to the AP government to bid for games through the APOA and it also wanted the government to recognise APOA, he said. Visakhapatnam with the best air, rail and road connectivity in the State along with best accommodation suits the needs of National Games, he said.
