Postpartum care vital in a mother’s life, says Dr. Pallavi

It looked like an infotainment of sorts for those who gathered at the hospital premises on Sunday morning to celebrate Mother’s Day and drive home the message of taking care of their health.

Combining education and entertainment, OMNI RK super speciality hospital organised an awareness programme for mothers to mark Mother’s Day.

Defining motherhood as an integral part of a woman’s journey, obstetrician and gynaecologist M.N.V. Pallavi said that postpartum care plays a crucial part in a mother’s life. “Most women become disoriented to take care of themselves over a period of time, especially after childbirth. This trend has to be changed by educating the new mothers through periodical camps. From charting out a nutritious diet to including a fitness routine that extends for half an hour and making slight lifestyle modifications, several things can be considered as part of the postpartum care,” she said.

Dr. Pallavi also shared tips on how traditional snacks like chikkis made of sesame seeds and jaggery or groundnuts with jaggery help boost haemoglobin level. “There is no need to make any drastic change in the daily menu. Just being little conscious while eating and considering little changes will do the trick. Curry leaves, drumstick leaves, beetroot juice, egg and liver meat contain rich sources of protein, vitamins and minerals which can be incorporated in the diet,” she added.

Senior consultant paediatrician B. Rajsekhar said that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months will go a long way in protecting the newborn against infections and reducing infant mortality rate to a considerable level.
