M. Janaki, a 2005 batch IAS officer, on Wednesday took over as Additional Commissioner of the GVMC. It was for the first time that an IAS officer has been appointed Additional Commissioner of the GVMC.

Before being posted here, she was Project Director of DRDA, Krishna district.

Ms. Janaki said she would be the second-in-command after Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana. She will hold a supervisory position without disturbing the present setup of additional commissioners – general, projects and finance.

The division of subjects between the Commissioner and the Additional Commissioner will have to take place. Ms. Janaki will go to Hyderabad to meet the Principal Secretary, MA&UD, for the purpose, it was learnt.

Also the Additional Commissioner post is likely to be upgraded to that of Special Commissioner. GVMC presently has special commissioners.

The division of subjects and upgrade move assumes significance with the State Government considering merger of Bhimunipatnam and Anakapalle municipalities and 10 gram panchayats with GVMC.

In an effort to decentralise the administration, zone set-up was put in place in the GVMC during the tenure of B. Ramanjaneyulu, predecessor of Mr. Satyanarayana, and zone commissioners appointed.

Beginning her career as Trainee Collector in Chittoor, Ms. Janaki was later Sub-Collector at Bhuvanagiri and Bhadrachalam, Project Director of District Water Management Agency, Chittoor and Municipal Commissioner, Tirupati.
