Three different cases were taken up by the Manipal Hospital for the workshop
A city hospital organised a live neuro endoscopy workshop on Sunday to help neurosurgeons of the area to get updated on this method of surgeries which were not commonly practised.
A noted neurosurgeon Y.R. Yadav, who is head of the neurosurgery at the NSC Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, and who performed a large number of such surgeries was the principal faculty of the workshop.
He is credited with inventing minimally invasive tubular brain retractor.
The surgeries were held at the Manipal Hospital and were relayed live from its operation theatre to a nearby star hotel where more than 60 neurosurgeons watched them live on LCD screen. Dr. Yadav who performed the surgeries along with Manipal Hospital’s consultant neurosurgeon Bharat Singh Naik, Assistant Professor at NSC Bose Medical College Vijay Parihar, consultant ENT surgeon of Max Hospitals, New Delhi, Keshavanand Konwar, explained the procedure and interacted with the neurosurgeons at the hotel clarifying their doubts.
Three different cases were taken up by the Manipal Hospital for the live surgery workshop.
A nine-month-old baby boy whose head started swelling since his fourth month due to excess accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid because of obstruction in its path of flow has undergone surgery.
The doctors created an alternative path for the flow of fluid through endoscopic surgery in the brain. The fluid was routed to the stomach to go out of the body as waste through urine. This has avoided use of catheters in the brain.
The second surgery was on a woman suffering severe lower back pain and sciatic pain involving right lower limb due to a slip disc, which was compressing the nerves in the spinal area. The disc was removed through endoscopy. The disc is totally removed or broken into two pieces depending on the need. The patient would not face problem if one disc is removed, said Dr. Sukesh Reddy.
The workshop concluded with a surgery on a 12-year-od girl suffering with pituitary macro adenoma. She is having Cushing’s syndrome - obese and having a moon face.
