Lightning sensor inaugurated

Worldwide Lightning Sensor Blitzortung was inaugurated by Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G. Nageswara Rao at the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography on Thursday.

The instrument detects the occurrence of lightning up to a radial extent of 5,500 km. The programme was initiated under an MoU between the department and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Japan.

The Blitzortung sensor, which is the first of its kind in India, is installed by a group of scientists from Japan – Prof Hirohiko Ishikawa, Head Severe Storms Division, DPRI, and Prof. Tomomi Narita, Shohan Institute of Technology, Tokyo University.

Principal of AU College of Science and Technology D.E. Babu, Registrar V. Uma Maheswara Rao and Head of the Department P. Suneetha participated, according to Prof. SSVS Ramakrishna.
