A driver from Karnataka, who was sentenced to death by a court in that State for brutally raping a teenager in December 2008, was sentenced to undergo life imprisonment by a city court for brutally raping and murdering a 30-year-old sex worker in the city on February 27, 2009.

Judge of the 13{+t}{+h}Additional District Court V. Srinivasa Rao on Friday found the driver V.K. Prabhakar (40) guilty and sentenced him to undergo life sentence.

According to the Gajuwaka police, Prabhakar after brutally raping a teenager with his friend in Karnataka in December 2008 came to Visakhapatnam and was working as driver of a steel plant contractor. On February 27, 2009 he had brutally raped and killed a 30-year-old female sex worker near Vadlapudi.

The then Inspector of Gajuwaka A.N. Murthy arrested Prabhakar in connection with this case and while the trial was going on, the Karnataka police came to know about the case and shifted him to Karnataka with court’s permission to stand trail in the teenager’s rape case. The victim appealed to the judge to award capital punishment to the two accused so that it would work as a deterrent for others from committing such crime. The court in Karnataka has recently awarded death penalty to Prabhakar in the gang rape case. He was brought here by the Gajuwaka police to stand trial in the sex worker’s rape and murder case and on Friday the Gajuwaka court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
