Licence of 90 medical stores suspended in city

The Drug Control Administration (DCA) has suspended the licences of 90 medical stores in Visakhapatnam violating provisions like selling drugs without bill, prescription, and selling prescription drugs in the absence of registered pharmacist.

During first six months of 2010, the DCA filed 59 prosecution cases in different courts of the district. It also preferred appeal in High Court in 9 cases, and 8 cases were pending in Sessions Courts.

Releasing a list of drug stores and non standard drug producers, the Assistant Director DCA Ravi Udaya Bhaskar said that it had picked up 117 samples for analysis, of them low quality producers were Sanchez Pharma, Thohana in Haryana; Adley Formulations, Kotla; Twenty First Century Pharma, Chennai.

Spurious drugs of Caplin Pint Laboratories, Chennai and others were picked, sale of drugs without pharmacist was being done by Pavani Medicals and General Stores in Gopalapatnam, Habit forming drugs were being sold by Sri Lakshmi Pharmaceuticals, Chodavaram, Vasupalli Raju Thatichetlapalem, Visakhapatnam.

Out of 117 samples 44 were picked up along with CBI officials from VPT Hospital, INHS Kalyani Hospital, Steel General Hospital of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Railway Hospital.
