Lepakshi expo gets under way

It was an avenue for several artisans from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and rest of the states, to assemble at one place and showcase their crafts.

The platform for craft-persons was created by the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation under the banner of ‘Lepakshi exhibition’.

More than 60 stalls, displaying various crafts, have been put up at the new rythu bazaar grounds, MVP Colony.

Inaugurating the fair here on Friday, Joint Collector Praveen Kumar said that artisans from across the States have come together to exhibit their creative skills.

“It is imperative to encourage the fading art and support their livelihoods by adding value to the crafts and purchasing the products at the exhibition,” he said.

Weavers from Hyderabad, Mangalagiri, Gadwal, Chirala, Uppada, Narayanpet and other places have stacked a range of saris to suit the traditional shoppers.

One of the counters has contemporary shades of Bengal cotton saris as well. Figurines made of brass and copper and impressive collection of terracotta toys also dot the fair.

Annual feature

Lepakshi’s manager in-charge K. Satyaveni said that the annual feature intend to draw people from different parts of the city as they would get a chance to browse through assorted wares, dress materials and saris, all at one place.

Timings

The exhibition is open at the grounds till September 7 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
