March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

A 27-year-old man of Gara mandal in Srikakulam district, who was declared “brain dead” following an accident, is giving a new lease of life to a few persons.

The family of Akella Suryanarayana agreed to donate his organs following counselling conducted on Sunday by Jeevan Daan personnel.

Suryanarayana was brought to Care Hospital here on Saturday night with injuries he had sustained in an accident.

After he was declared brain dead on Sunday, his family members were convinced to donate his organs so that some chronically ill patients would get relief.

“The process of harvesting the organs is going on,” said Vice-Chancellor of NTR UHS T. Raviraju late in the afternoon. Dr. Raviraju was instrumental in streamlining cadaver donation through Jeevan Daan programme.

One kidney and liver would be transplanted on patients at the Care Hospital, one kidney would be sent to Apollo Hospital here.
