‘Jatha' flagged off

March 16, 2012 02:37 pm | Updated 02:39 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

People should not be sacrificed for the sake of a few investors in the name of development and no destruction should take place in the name of development, Movement for People-Centred Development (MPCD) member Y. Krishna Murthy said here on Thursday. He was speaking before the launch of a nine-day ‘jatha' to Nellore being organised by MPCD to create awareness among the people on destructive policies of the government in front of the Gandhi statue near GVMC main office building. A meeting on the need for people-centred development would be held in Hyderabad on March 25.

The ‘jatha' would cover several hundreds of km. More than 70 meetings would be held during the ‘jatha', said MPCD member J.V. Ratnam. The ‘jatha' was flagged off by Andhra University professor P.D. Satya Paul, who said people were being forced into unbearable conditions with industries and projects causing a lot of pollution and denying livelihood. Leaders of people's organisations expressed solidarity with the ‘jatha'.
