Children indulged in a riot of colours at a painting competition named Pratibimb-10 conducted by the Navy at Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

The Fleet Maintenance Unit of Eastern Naval Command conducted the event as part of several programmes planned for Navy Day celebrations on December 4.

Rear Admiral S.S. Lal, Director General, Naval Projects, Ravi Shankar Patnaik, Head of Fine Arts Department, Andhra University and others were present.

Braving the inclement weather, nearly 1,000 children from various schools took part. The competition was held for children under three different categories of sub-junior, junior and senior groups. Themes of festivals of India and a view from Kailasagiri/Dolphin's Nose were given to the sub-junior group. The themes for others included Independence/Republic Day parade and marine life/bird sanctuary for juniors and role of Navy/armed forces in disaster management and Indian Navy-2020 for the seniors. Children from special schools were also invited once again to take part. Thirty children participated in the event in speech/hearing challenged categories. The themes for them included garden/zoo and day in spring season/Vizag Harour and the differently-abled were allowed to paint on any topic of their choice.

A panel of four eminent artists from the naval community evaluated the paintings and short-listed best paintings in each category. Prizes for the winners will be presented on November 23 on-board a warship during a day-at-sea programme.
