A second-year student of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) was reportedly kidnapped on Monday and a ransom of ₹15 lakh has been demanded from his family members.

The kidnappers allegedly also threatened to kill him if the parents failed to give the ransom money. An FIR has been lodged at Gopalapatnam police and teams have been formed to investigate and rescue the student.

The police said G. Manikanta (20), resident of Lakshminagar area under Gopalapatnam police station limits and student of a private ITI at Pendurhi area in the city was kidnapped by some unidentified persons on Monday afternoon.

Manikanta’s sister received a phone call from the kidnappers on Tuesday morning.

The kidnappers claimed that they got a contract of ₹10 lakh to kidnap and kill Manikanta and they demanded a ransom of ₹15 lakh to release Manikanta.

Sources said that Manikanta’s father is a supervisor at VSEZ and is not a rich man. Based on a complaint from Manikanta’s parents, Inspector of Gopalapatnam K Vykunta Rao formed special teams to rescue Manikanta from the clutches of the kidnappers.

The police are also suspecting that someone known to Manikanta or someone within his friends circle or relatives might be involved in the kidnap incident.
