Inputs sought from consumer rights activist

July 25, 2014 12:07 am | Updated 12:07 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs has sought inputs from a senior consumer rights activist Chapa Kumar of the city, to improve the draft for amendments to the Consumer Protection Act.

Mr. Kumar, who is president of the Visakha Consumers’ Education and Service Society, received a communication from Additional Secretary to the Department of Consumer Affairs of the Ministry G. Gurucharan to suggest improvements to the proposals of amendment. Mr. Kumar has to send his suggestions by August 10.

The Ministry felt that in spite of the CP Act of 1986, amended in 1991, 1993, and 2002, the consumers were facing some limitations and experiencing difficulties while getting their grievances redressed through the consumer fora. Also, the general experience was that the objective of a speedy, inexpensive, and simple redressal was not achieved.
