In an effort to promote scientific thinking and help students understand the application of science in almost every sphere of life, ‘Chekumuki Science Talent Test’ saw huge participation at Andhra University High School here on Sunday.
The one-hour district-level test, hosted by Jana Vignana Vedika, drew 162 schools with 210 teams, both English and Telugu mediums, together where around three students represented each school. The group-discussion based test consisted of 60 multiple choice questions related to physics, biology, chemistry and general knowledge.
After browsing through the science exhibits put up at the venue, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju said, “Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former Chief Minister of the State Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh achieved great heights in the field of science. Their constant endeavour to excel in the chosen domain made them discover interesting features of the subject. It is important to stay focused, manage time and explore beyond textbooks.”
Professor in Department of Physics, AU Poornachandra Rao explained about the relation of science in day-to-day life. “Getting the fundamentals right and imparting the subject in an experiential format continues to be a challenge for many teachers,” he said.
“Science is part of our life. The achievement of any developing country is measured through its scientific advancement. In terms of scientific contributions, India stands only 3 per cent as against 19 per cent of China. Lack of quality in the education system, poor infrastructure facilities and incompetent teaching methods are some of the aspects that need attention,” Registrar of AU K. Rama Mohana Rao said.
The celebration over here concluded with prize distribution ceremony where Principal of AU High School English Medium G. Vijaya Lakshmi and Headmistress of the AU High School Telugu Medium M. Manga Thayaru, president of Jana Vignana Vedika T. Kameswara Rao and secretary T.V. Gopala Rao also participated. The top winners in English and Telugu mediums from Little Angels School, MVP Colony and Visakha Vimala Vidyalayam will head to the State-level contest which is to be held in the month of January.
