City Commissioner of Police Amit Garg inspected Ramakrishna Beach on Monday where the Independence Day parade will be held this year.

This is for the first time in the history of AP that the parade will be held in Visakhapatnam.

The Commissioner was accompanied by District Collector N. Yuvaraj, Commandant of the 2{+n}{+d}Battalion- Kurnool, Vijay Kumar, Commandant of the 16{+t}{+h}Battalion, Surya Chander Rao, DCP (Crime) T. Ravi Kumar Murthy and other senior officers.

Interacting with The Hindu , Mr. Amit Garg said that RK Beach was selected after considering other venues and a feasibility report would be sent to the Chief Minister’s Office on Tuesday.

The likely choice of the dais area from where Mr. Naidu will take the salute is yet to be finalised, but measurements of a few feasible areas have been taken.

Sources said that the area near Vishwapriya Function Hall or Police Mess could be the likely locations.

In all, 15 contingents, including seven armed contingent and eight unarmed contingent, will participate in the parade. In all, 1,500 uniformed men from various battalions will be drawn for the parade.

The unarmed contingents will comprise those from NCC, NSS, and Scouts and Guides. Other specialised squads such as the dog squads and bomb squads are likely showcase their expertise.

Apart from the cultural events, tableaux depicting cultural heritage of the State and welfare schemes will roll down the Beach Road on the occasion.

According to Mr. Garg, the Chief Minister will also give away the Indian Police Medal, President Police Medal, and gallantry medals on the occasion.

The rehearsals for the parade will commence from August 3 and the final full-dress rehearsal will be observed on August 13.

“The I-Day parade arrangements will serve as a dry run for us for the upcoming Navy’s International Fleet Review, which is scheduled to be held next February,” said Mr. Amit Garg.

“Keeping in mind the terror threats, the police are not leaving any stone unturned for the event. Apart from sanitising the entire Beach Road days before the event, commandos from the elite forces such as Octopus, Greyhounds, and the APSP will form part of the security rings,” said a senior officer from the Special Branch.
